Health has a direct bearing on human life and on the survival of mankind. Health is a precious gift from the Creator of the universe. Alcohol consumption creates many health problems related to Liver, Kidney and Gastrointestinal system. It is one of the most dangerous substances and linked to crimes like rape, murder, suicide, family violence and accidents. Drinking is strictly prohibited in Islam and has been termed Ummul Khabais (the mother of evils) in the Prophetic traditions. Long term Cigarette, Cigar and Pipe smoking is contributory to development of Cancer and Cardiorespiratory diseases. About six million people die due to smoking related diseases every year the World over which includes more than eight lakh Indians. The target of Psycho-active drugs is the brain. For example, LSD produces disorganisation of thought processes temporarily, while being high on Marijuana impairs the complex psychomotor skill (necessary for driving). Drug dependence is basically a social and public health issue and it has psycho-social, medical, economical and legal implications. The public health expenditure in our country is abysmally low and patients bear the brunt of high treatment cost. Therefore the impact of drug abuse is not confined to the consumer alone. More investment is required on education and public health issues by the Government and Social organisations. Healthcare should therefore, be prioritised over economy.
